Terms of Service

Effective June 12, 2026 · Last updated June 12, 2026

These Terms of Service (the “Terms”) are an agreement between you and Service in Unity (“Service in Unity,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) governing your use of the In Unity Meals application and website at meals.serviceinunity.org (the “Service”). Please read them carefully. By creating an account, joining a household, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Who we are

In Unity Meals is a free meal-planning tool made by Service in Unity, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Ithaca, New York. The Service is provided at no cost. There is no premium tier, no advertising, and we do not sell your data.

2. Who can use the Service

You must be at least 18 years old to create an account and agree to these Terms. People under 18 may use the Service only under the account of, and with the supervision of, a parent or guardian who agrees to these Terms on their behalf. The Service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly allow anyone under 13 to create an account.

By using the Service, you confirm that you meet these requirements and that the information you provide is accurate.

3. The Service is free, and it may change

We offer the Service free of charge and may change, suspend, limit, or discontinue any part of it at any time, with or without notice. We may add, remove, or modify features, including AI features and household limits. We are not obligated to maintain any particular feature, and we do not guarantee that the Service will be available, uninterrupted, or error-free.

4. Your account and sign-in

Sign-in uses a one-time magic link sent to your email address. We do not store passwords. You are responsible for maintaining access to and the security of the email account you use, and for all activity that occurs through your account. If you believe someone has gained unauthorized access to your account or email, notify us promptly. We are not responsible for losses arising from unauthorized use of your account or email.

5. Households and sharing

In Unity Meals is built around shared households. You should understand and accept the following before joining or sharing a household:

  • All members of a household can see and edit the household's shared data, including the meal plan, meal library, grocery list, AI budget, and household settings.
  • A household join code or share link grants whoever has it the ability to join your household and access that shared data. You are responsible for who you share a join code or link with.
  • Any member can change shared settings, including the AI budget and plan start date.
  • If you remove someone from a household, or leave a household, that does not undo changes already made or content already viewed.

By creating, joining, or sharing a household, you accept responsibility for these consequences.

6. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of these Terms.
  • Upload, store, or share content that is illegal, harmful, infringing, abusive, or that violates the rights of others.
  • Attempt to access accounts, households, or data that are not yours.
  • Probe, scan, overload, disrupt, reverse engineer, or interfere with the Service or its infrastructure.
  • Use automated means to access the Service in a way that burdens it, or attempt to circumvent any budget, rate, or usage limit.
  • Misuse the AI features, including attempts to extract underlying prompts, models, or other users' data.

We may suspend or terminate access for any violation of this section, at our discretion.

7. Your content

You keep ownership of the custom meals, recipes, ingredients, notes, and other content you add to the Service (“Your Content”). By adding Your Content, you grant Service in Unity a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to store, process, display, and use Your Content for the purpose of operating and improving the Service, including making it available to other members of your household. You are responsible for Your Content and confirm you have the right to share it. You can remove Your Content by deleting it or your account, subject to normal backup and retention cycles.

8. AI features

The Service uses an automated AI system to suggest meals, sides, and leftover ideas, subject to a budget cap you can configure. You understand and agree that:

  • AI suggestions are generated automatically and may be inaccurate, incomplete, unsuitable, or wrong.
  • AI suggestions are not nutritional, dietary, medical, or allergy advice, and must not be relied on as such.
  • You are solely responsible for reviewing every suggestion and verifying that any meal, ingredient, or substitution is safe and appropriate for you and anyone you cook for.
  • We do not review AI suggestions before you see them and make no representation about their accuracy or fitness for any purpose.

9. Food safety, allergens, and health

This is important. The Service helps you plan and organize food. It does not make food safe, and it is not a source of dietary, nutritional, or medical guidance.

  • You are solely responsible for all food choices, preparation, storage, handling, and consumption decisions, including those involving allergens, intolerances, dietary restrictions, religious requirements, and medical conditions.
  • Meal names, ingredient lists, leftover ideas, and substitution suggestions, whether seeded by us or generated by AI, may be incomplete or inaccurate and may omit allergens or other critical information.
  • Always read product labels and consult a qualified professional for any dietary, nutritional, or medical concern. Do not rely on the Service for any decision that could affect health or safety.

You assume all risk arising from your food choices and your use of the Service.

10. Third-party services

The Service relies on third-party providers, including hosting, database, email, and AI providers, and may link to third-party websites or content (for example, recipe links you add). We do not control and are not responsible for third-party services or content, and your use of them is at your own risk and subject to their terms.

11. No warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Service in Unity disclaims all warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that any content or AI suggestion is accurate, complete, or reliable.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties, so some of the above may not apply to you. In that case, such warranties are limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law:

  • Service in Unity, and its directors, officers, employees, staff, volunteers, and agents, will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, data, goodwill, or other intangible losses, arising from or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Service.
  • This includes, without limitation, any claim arising from AI suggestions, meal or ingredient information, allergens, food preparation or consumption, data loss, or household sharing.
  • Our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim (which, for a free service, is zero dollars) or ten U.S. dollars.

These limitations apply regardless of the legal theory and even if we were advised of the possibility of such damages. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of the above may not apply to you; in that case our liability is limited to the minimum extent permitted by law.

13. Indemnification

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Service in Unity and its directors, officers, employees, staff, volunteers, and agents from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses, including reasonable legal fees, arising from or related to your use of the Service, Your Content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or the rights of any third party.

14. Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time and may delete your account or household from within the Service or by contacting us. We may suspend or terminate your access at any time, with or without notice, for any reason, including violation of these Terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination, including ownership, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and indemnification, will survive.

15. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, for material changes, provide notice through the Service or by email. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.

16. Governing law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. You agree that any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service will be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in New York, and you consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.

17. General

If any provision of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest remains in effect, and the unenforceable provision will be applied to the maximum extent permitted. Our failure to enforce any provision is not a waiver of it. These Terms are the entire agreement between you and Service in Unity regarding the Service and supersede any prior agreements. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them in connection with a merger, reorganization, or transfer of the Service.

18. Contact

Questions about these Terms can be sent to Service in Unity at Meals@ServiceinUnity.org.
